What is TMD?
TMD refers to problems with the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) — the hinge joint that connects your jaw to temporal bones in your skull (just in front of your ears). This flexible joint allows you to talk, chew, and yawn. Stress or misalignment in this joint can lead to TMJ disorders - also know as TMD (Temporomandibular Disorder).
Common Symptoms of TMJ Disorders
- Jaw pain or soreness
- Clicking, popping, or grinding sounds when opening or closing the mouth
- Limited jaw movement or locking
- Headaches or earaches
- Facial pain or discomfort while chewing
Common causes of TMD
- Teeth grinding/clenching (bruxism)
- Jaw injury
- Arthritis in the jaw joint
- Stress (which can cause muscle tension or jaw clenching)
- Misaligned bite or jaw
- Whiplash or other injuries
How is TMD Treated?
- Mouthguards or splints
- Jaw exercises and physical therapy
- Stress management
- Pain relief medications
- Dental treatments to correct bite (in some cases)
- Surgery (rare and only if conservative treatment fails)
