What are dental sealants
Dental sealants are a protective coating which is applied on the chewing surface of teeth.
This seals the naturally occuring pits and grooves, preventing build-up of bacteria and
food particles - thereby helping keep the teeth healthy.
Why are sealants needed
The back teeth of our mouth (pre-molars and molars) are susceptible to tooth decay because
their chewing surface is irregular. The numerous pits and grooves on the surface of these
teeth harbor bacteria and left over food particles. These pits and fissures cannot be
easily cleaned by a toothbrush. Hence, this is where tooth decay initially starts. The
bacteria and food create acid on the tooth surface, destroying enamel and causing cavities.
Dental sealants are strongly recommended by the American Dental Association as they have
been proven to reduce cavities drastically.
At Dental Comfort the application of sealants is a NO SHOT, NO DRILL, pain free procedure.
